The Situation

Before partnering with placement management software InPlace, Boston College relied on a spreadsheet-based system to manage over 700 annual placements across its nursing, social work, and teacher education programs. This decentralized approach led to data inconsistencies, such as spelling variations and minor errors that created significant data challenges. Ensuring the integrity and security of their information was increasingly difficult, hindering efficient operations.

Boston College

Boston College’s nursing, social work, and teacher education programs serve over 10,000 students in the greater Boston area. For more than 35 years, these fully accredited programs have been among the institution’s most respected offerings.

Impact

For Boston College, the fragmented spreadsheet system not only posed security risks but also created inefficiencies. Without a singular system, frequent formatting and data entry errors made it difficult to extract useful insights, track placement histories, or identify patterns for improvement. The manual process was time-consuming, adding to the administrative burden, and left staff concerned about the security of sensitive data.

Our goal was to find a system that provided clean and secure data management, while enhancing the student experience, and being adaptable for different programs. We chose InPlace because it was well-established, provided full access to our data, had a robust query (reporting) tool, and allowed configurable access controls.
